Read before you use this list. It is compiled from state lists dated December 2025 (DHCS IMD list) and January 2023 (DHCS county LPS-designated facilities), plus state hospital pages. Facilities open, close, change names and change designation. Phone numbers may be out of date. This is a reference for education, not a referral or placement tool, and it is not a list of beds available today. Confirm with your county behavioral health department or the facility. In an emergency call 911; for crisis support call or text 988.
What the facility types mean
- State hospital. Run by the California Department of State Hospitals (Atascadero, Coalinga, Metropolitan, Napa, Patton). Mostly forensic commitments, plus some civil.
- Psychiatric hospital. A freestanding acute psychiatric hospital licensed by the state.
- Hospital psych unit. A general hospital with an inpatient psychiatric unit. These entries come from the county LPS-designated list, which means the facility is designated to take involuntary holds. The list does not say which hold types each accepts.
- Psychiatric health facility (PHF). A licensed 24-hour inpatient psychiatric facility, often used for involuntary holds and shorter stays.
- Rehab / IMD / locked SNF. Mental health rehabilitation centers and other institutions for mental diseases, including some locked skilled nursing facilities with a special treatment program. These generally serve people who need longer-term treatment, including many on LPS conservatorships.
Gaps in this directory
- It does not include crisis stabilization units or crisis residential programs, because I could not find a current statewide list.
- It does not include programs inside prisons, county jails or juvenile facilities.
- Bed counts differ between lists. IMD entries show licensed beds, and hospital-unit entries show the designated psychiatric beds printed on the county list.
- Seven facilities on an older (2019) rehab list are left out because they do not appear on the December 2025 list. They may have closed or been renamed.
- The state's own current licensing data was not reachable when this was compiled, so some closures and new facilities are missing.
